Views of the Earth today Earth as a system. The earth is a spherical shape It supports a complex web of life. The earth’s system has 4 major parts: –
@earthscience92. What is a System? Systems – a group of interacting parts that work to together to do a job or to form a whole. Open Systems Closed Systems.
What on Earth? What is the Earth system?
What is Earth? Scientists divide Earth into systems to help them better understand the planet. The outermost Earth system is an invisible layer of gases.

Use this version if you prefer your students take notes and not dig facts out of their textbooks. Materials per student: sheet of copy paper, pencil, colored pencils, scissors, small cup Super-Simple Procedure: Click through the PowerPoint and have students do everything shown on the screen! (See notes on later slides for more info.) Earth’s 5 Spheres With paper turned sideways, trace cup to get the Earth circle shown. Draw some “continents”. The ovals on the top/bottom of earth will become ice caps.

Earth’s 5 Spheres Color the continents brown.

Earth’s 5 Spheres Bio-sphere- life life is found almost everywhere on earth- in soil, lakes, and even on rocks most life needs oxygen or carbon dioxide to survive most also need liquid water and moderate temperatures Geo-sphere- The rocky part of Earth Goes from center of Earth to the surface Divided into 3 layers: crust (least dense), mantle, and core (most dense) land the sun is the original source of energy for all life on earth Atmo-sphere- air The invisible gas surrounding earth About 600km high, but most gases are near earth’s surface 78% of the gas is nitrogen Atmosphere reflects and absorbs some harmful UV rays Earth’s 5 Spheres Hydro-sphere- Includes lakes, rivers, marshes, clouds, rain, and underground water 97% of all water is salt; oceans cover 70% of Earth’s surface The water cycle is how water moves on, above and below earth liquid water Cryo-sphere- frozen All the frozen water on earth Mostly in Antarctica and the Artic Includes snow, glaciers, sea ice, icebergs, and even frost in the ground Amount changes with the seasons Color the ocean dark blue, and the atmosphere light blue (could use the same pencil and shade lightly for the atmosphere). Leave the polar ice caps uncolored. Pattern as we discuss each sphere: Name the sphere and underline it (it’s hyphenated to draw more attention to the self-explaining name, as in- “hydro-” means what?) Draw an arrow to where it’s at One-word association Key facts
