Thou shalt believe all that the Church teaches, and shalt observe all its directions. Thou shalt defend the Church. Thou shalt respect all weaknesses, and shalt constitute thyself the defender of them. Thou shalt love the country in the which thou wast born. Thou shalt not recoil before thine enemy. Respect life and freedom. Exhibit manners. Be polite and attentive. Thou shalt make war against the Infidel without cessation, and without mercy. Thou shalt perform scrupulously thy feudal duties, if they be not contrary to the laws of God. Die with honor Thou shalt never lie, and shalt remain faithful to thy pledged word. Loyalty to one’s friends and those who lay their trust in thee. Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil. Be respectful of host, women, and honor. Loyalty to country, King, honor, freedom, and the code of chivalry. Code of Chivalry

The Art of Courtly Love Marriage is no real excuse for not loving. No one can be bound by a double love. It is well known that love is always increasing or decreasing. Boys do not love until they reach the age of maturity. No one should be deprived of love without the very best of reasons. No one can love unless he is propelled by the persuasion of love. It is not proper to love any woman whom one would be ashamed to seek to marry. A true lover does not desire to embrace in love anyone except his beloved. When made public love rarely endures. The easy attainment of love makes it of little value: difficulty of attainment makes it prized. Every lover regularly turns pale in the presence of his beloved. When a lover suddenly catches sight of his beloved his heart palpitates. A new love puts an old one to flight. Good character alone makes any man worthy of love. Real jealousy always increases the feeling of love. Jealousy increases when one suspects his beloved. He whom the thought of love vexes eats and sleeps very little. Every act of a lover ends in the thought of his beloved. A true lover considers nothing good except what he thinks will please his beloved.. A true lover is constantly and without intermission possessed by the thought of his beloved. Nothing forbids one woman being loved by two men or one man by two women. The Art of Courtly Love

Today’s Learning Targets I will be able to explain the role of the Black Death, Crusades, and Reformation, in bringing an end to the Dark Ages and beginning the European Renaissance

How did Europe change from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance? Feudalism People at the bottom had no power Pope has a lot of control Lack of knowledge and advancement (Taking apart the Colosseum because they didn’t know how to maintain it or build their own) No feudalism Serfs gain power and money Pope loses a lot of his control Lots of new arts and technology Michelangelo Leonardo DiVinci

Reformation

Reformation Splitting of Christianity into different groups or churches Effect Causes the Pope to lose power over Europe

Crusades

Crusades Military expeditions of the Christians to regain the Holy Land (Jerusalem) from the Muslims Effects: Crusaders bring back knowledge trade routes with the rest of the continent begin (Silk Road!) and bring even more technology with them

You can also call me: Bubonic Plague, Black Death, Black Plague

Bubonic Plague Worldwide pandemic that struck Europe in the 1300’s Killed about 1/3 of Europe’s population About 75 million people Effect Reduces the number of serfs working and so it gives the survivors more bargaining power against the lords Disrupts feudalism

Fleas living on rats in acargo ships Fleas sucked the rat’s blood When rats die, fleas come on land Fleas bite humans and INFECT them Humans SPREAD disease by airborne germs

Ring Around the Rosy Ring around the Rosy First visible sign of infection was the red rings surrounding a rosy bump all over the body Pocket full of Posy A common belief of the time was that the plague was borne on "foul air." The rationale was that people could protect themselves from the bad air by keeping their local air smelling sweet. That, and it also helped them deal with the smell of death... On the other hand, another sign of infection was the foul stench that would begin to emanate from the victim's body as their lymph system began filling with blood. Those still mobile endeavored to mask their stench and avoid detection by carrying flowers on their person. Ashes, Ashes, In the terminal phases of the disease, victims would be hemorrhaging internally, sometimes triggering sneezing as it irritated the breathing passages. "Ashes" is a child's approximation of a paroxysm of sneezing. In this weakened state, a victim could, and often did, sneeze their lungs out. Messy... We all Fall Down By now, this one should need little explanation...
