Put First Things First Habit 3

Bell Ringer: Quote Response This is a personal mission statement adopted by Katie Hall. It is short, but to her it means everything. Write a journal entry about what this mission statement means to you. “Nothing Less.”

Review Habit 1: Be Proactive You are the driver, not the passenger. Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind Decide where you want to go and draw up a map to get there. Habit 3: Put First Things First Get there! Don’t let roadblocks knock you off course!

Prioritize and do the most important thing first Put First Things First Definition: Prioritize and do the most important thing first Prioritize and manage your time Identify what the most important things are in your life Learn tools that allow you to be strong during difficult times and to live life according to what matters most. Have will-power to say yes to the most important things and won’t-power to say no to less important things.

The Time Quadrants Quadrant of Excellence THE PRIORITIZER URGENT NOT URGENT IMPORTANT THE PROCRASTINATOR Puts off doing things Does everything at the last minute Results: Stress, anxiety & burnout THE PRIORITIZER Looks at everything and prioritizes to make sure things get done Says no with a smile Results: Controls their life, has balance, and performs high NOT IMPORTANT THE YES-MAN Tries to please other people Can’t say “no” as to avoid offending others Often caves to peer pressure Results: Reputation of being a “pleaser” and lack of discipline THE SLACKER Wastes time Does too many unproductive activities Results: Lack of responsibility, guilt, and flakiness.

Quadrant #1: The Procrastinator A procrastinator: Says, “I’ll do it later!” Doesn’t kick in until there’s an emergency Spending too much time here causes: Stress Anxiety Mediocre performance There will always be things we can’t control, like illness and last minute meetings. Don’t let this be you!

Quadrant #2: The Prioritizer Quadrant of Excellence A prioritizer: Has control of their life Is balanced Takes care of business Makes plans and puts the big rocks first Make sure this is you!

Quadrant #3: The Yes-Man Attends to things that aren’t urgent, but may seem important (i.e. a ringing phone). Believes other people’s “big rocks” are their “big rocks” Become a people pleaser Lack discipline Feel like a doormat for others to wipe their feet on Don’t let this be you!

Quadrant #4: The Slacker Loves anything in excess (i.e. too much TV, video games, web surfing) Is a professional loafer Puts small things first Is a category of waste Nothing in this quadrant is urgent or important Lack of responsibility Don’t let this be you!

Where Do You Spend Most of Your Time? We all spend time in all four quadrants, but the goal should be to increase the time spent in quadrant 2. Shrink Q1 by procrastinating less Say “No!” to activities in Q3 activities Cut down on Q4 time-wasting activities

Assignment & Homework Due Tomorrow In-Class Assignment Homework Complete the “Why Plan” worksheet and turn in to the bin If you don’t complete, take home and finish. Plan out this week - Monday through Friday Block out time for ‘Big Rocks’ Fill in other time with less important tasks Due Tomorrow
