Meet Dilmaya She’s 8 years old and lives in Kathmandu in Nepal. Tell the Children a little bit about Dilmaya: She’s 8 and lives in Kathmandu, Nepal. She has just started to go to school. Her life is very different to ours…

What do you think this is? Tell the children this is where many children like Dilmaya live, it is called a slum. About 50,000 people in Nepal live in slums like these – perhaps compare the number to a similar size town or village that the children can relate to. Explain to the children that houses can be made from any sort of materials that people can get hold of. Discuss what sort of materials they could be, do the children have any ideas; wood, brick, metal plastic etc.

Dilmaya’s Story What do you think Dilmaya is doing here? Explain to the children that Dilmaya wasn’t always able to go to school. In Kathmandu parents have to pay fees for there children to go to school and Dilmaya’s parents didn’t have enough money. Instead of school, Dilmaya would go to work with her mum and dad. They had to sort through rubbish to find things that they could re-use or recycle to make money from. They are known as waste pickers. They would earn £1 a day. – Ask the children what they think they could buy with £1 to make some realistic comparisons to this value. What do you think Dilmaya is doing here?

Dilmaya at work What are the dangers? What could help Dilmaya? Explain to the children that the job that Dilmaya and her parents have to do can be very dangerous. Dilmaya doesn’t have any shoes to wear. There is all sorts of rubbish on the waste tip different kinds that have different dangers. Ask the children what dangers they can think of. Broken glass, rotting food, human poo! All of these things could hurt Dilmaya by cutting her or making her poorly. Ask the children what they think could help Dilmaya and her mum and dad? - Shoes, protective clothing, masks…if Dilmaya didn’t have to go to work at all?...

Practical Action working with Dilmaya’s Mum and Dad What do you think she’s doing now? How will this help her and her family? Practical Action is working with many of the women waste pickers to train them how to make and sell useful items for a profit. Dimaya’s mum has now joined one of these groups and has learned how to make as key rings, loofers and mobile phone covers. What do you think Dilmaya’s parents could buy and pay for with this extra money? Clothes, food, books, school uniform and…… Dilmaya’s schools fees…

Practical Action working with Dilmaya’s Mum and Dad Dilmaya’s Dad: What is Dimaya’s dad wearing that will make a difference to his job? Practical Action has begun working with waste pickers in Kathmandu to help make them more safe while they are at work and to help them to earn more money. Can you see what Dilmaya’s dad is now wearing that might make him safer at work? Gloves, boots, overalls

Dilmaya goes to school! With the money that people just like you have raised, Practical Action was able to help Dilmaya and her family. Now Dilmaya goes to school, just like you do. She no longer has to work on the rubbish dumps. Her parents are safer in their jobs and have money to pay for her school fees, uniform and books. One day Dilmaya wants to be a doctor.
