The Language of Safety and Health Signs and Signals in Wood Industry Personal Protective Equipment

Contents of the lecture Safety and Health Protection at Work Personal Protective Equipment PPE Legislation

Safety and Health Protection at Work Secondary school and university students: - Theoretical knowledge of woodworking - Obtaining practical skills WATCH OUT! We are working, that is operating! We are threatened by danger of bodily injury!

Safety and Health Protection at Work I am employed and I work: in woodworking operation at the workplace within working hours I perform activities during which I have to pay an increased attention

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) § 6, part. 3 of Safety and Health Protection at Work Law 124/2006 Coll. An employer is obliged free of charge to provide employees with working clothing and working boots, if they work in an environment in which clothing or boots are subject to extreme wearing out or extreme dirting according to the special regulation – the Slovak Government directive 387/2006 Coll. BEWARE! In woodworking industry there is an environment in which clothing and boots are subject to extreme wearing out or dirting

PPE – Personal Protective Equipment Personal protective equipment is every equipment which an employee at work: wears holds or uses in some other way including its accessories and attachments, if it is intended to protect employee's safety and health.

Requirements for PPE PPE has to ensure effective protection against existing and also foreseeable danger, to correspond to existing and foreseeable working conditions and working environment at the workplace, to meet ergonomic requirements, to comply with employee's health condition, to be suitable for use. PPE must not increase risk and danger at workplace

Ear protectors with the receiver for low-frequency induction loop. Ear protectors with intercommunicative equipment for communicating. Receiver ear protectors adjustable to a helmet.

PPE FOR EYE AND FACE PROTECTION Goggles against physical influences and liquids, e.g. against mechanical influences, against X-ray radiation, laser radiation, ultra- violet radiation, infra-red radiation, against sun radiation, water. Shields protecting the head. Hoods. Welding helmets, shields and goggles. Masks and helmets for arc welding held by hands, positioned on the head by means of a strip or adjustable to the protective helmet.

PPE FOR BREATHING ORGANS PROTECTION Safety mask. Mouthpiece with small industrial filters. Respirators against organic vapours, toxic dust and smoke, aerosols. Filters against dust, radioactive dust. Masks with filters, e.g. against organic vapours and gases, carbon monoxide, aerosols, acid gases. Insulating oxygen or air breathing apparatuses, which are portable and remote. Diving equipment.

PPE FOR UPPER EXTREMITIES PROTECTION Safety gloves – gauntlets (mittens, three-finger or five-finger gloves) for work with machine equipment, with hand tools and instruments, for handling with materials against stabbing, cutting, sliding, vibrations, for protection against chemical substances and biological materials, against electric current and voltage, against emitting heat, cold, against ionising radiation. Safety fingers for finger protection. Safety sleeves for arm protection. Wrist straps for wrist protection. Palm-covers for palm protection. Forearm protectives from the ring netting. Pads under elbows to protect elbows against pressure.

PPE FOR LOWER EXTREMITIES PROTECTION Safety footwear - low, ankle, mid-high and high. Boots with protective spikes. Boots with protection of instep. Boots that can be taken off fast. Boots with soles resistant to heat. Boots resistant to radiating heat. Warmed-up boots. Boots resistant to vibrations. Antistatic boots. Insulated boots, high boots or galoshes. Safety boots for work with chain saws. Safety boots with soles resistant to puncturing, slide, liquids, chemicals, e.g. against caustic matters, organic solvents, oils. Protector against cutting (e.g. thighs). Knee and foreleg guards. Detachable instep protectors. Gaiters. Replaceable soles or arch supporters to shoes resistant to radiating heat, cold, puncturing. Detachable spikes for ice, snow or other slippery surfaces.

PPE FOR TRUNK AND BODY PROTECTION Safety vests, overalls and aprons to protect when working with machine equipment and hand tools against stabbing, cutting, spattering with molten iron and like that. Safety vests, overalls, smocks and aprons for protection against chemicals and biological materials. Warmed up vests. Aprons for protection against X-ray radiation. Body straps, e.g. belly and kidney.

PPE FOR THE WHOLE BODY PROTECTION Aids for prevention from fall Protective clothing, e.g. two-part clothing or overalls Safety covers

PPE FOR SKIN PROTECTION Protective pastes, greases, oils against water, organic solvents, ultra- violet radiation, and insects. OTHERS Life jacket. Accessories (underwear, stockings and like that). Rubber insulating mat. Portable equipment for individual use which announces or records harmful or dangerous working factor (e.g. personal dosimeter).
