Presentation transcript:

PRO-CON debate: Should the definition of Day Surgery in Scandinavia be extended to <24hrs ward? JOHAN RAEDER Conclusion : NO !! We do not want: Incentive for staying in hospital when not needed Confusion about: terms – economy- reimbursement Increased complexity, increased costs

Definitions (rest of the world???) Outpatient: - Could be sent home right away Ambulatory surgery /Day Surgery: - need some surveillance afterwards -general/regional anaesthesia -surgical procedure In-patient: - Staying overnight in hospital (≠ hotel)

Day surgery in Norway – New definition? Inpatients (34%) «True» Day Surgery (50%) ??  Some patients previously discharged same day will stay overnight!

Pro Ambulatory Care ( success criteria): Better information Less delays, less post-ponements Better mobilization Less hospital, less “feeling ill” environments Less hospital infections Less reduction in mental function ”Home is best!” (…if you feel safe and comfortable!)
