Mass

What is mass??? Mass is how we measure the amount of matter an object consists of. Everything in the universe is made up of matter, therefore everything in the universe has mass, no matter how small. When we measure an object’s mass, the basic unit of measurement is a gram (g.)

Mass vs. Weight Mass and weight are NOT the same thing. Weight measures how much gravity is pulling down on an object. Ex. The moon has less gravity than Earth, so you would weigh less on the moon. Jupiter on the other hand has much more gravity than Earth, so you would weigh a LOT more on Jupiter.

Mass vs. Weight An object’s mass is consistent throughout the universe. An object floating around in space has no weight, but it’s mass is the same as it would be on Earth. If an object had no mass, it wouldn't exist.

Exit Ticket Record the mass of the aluminum bar on a piece of paper. Make sure every member of your group’s name is on the exit pass before you turn it in.

Measuring Mass So how do we measure mass? We are going to use an instrument called a Triple Beam Balance. This instrument will measure an object’s mass in grams.

Using a Triple Beam Balance First, take everything off of the measuring tray, and move the riders all the way to the left. Next, use the adjustment knob to line up the pointer with the zero mark. Otherwise known as “zeroing” your balance.

Using a Triple Beam Balance Once your balance is zeroed, put the object you’re measuring the mass of on the measuring tray. Next use the riders to “balance” the pointer.

The Riders Three riders, 10g, 100g, and 1g. Adjust the riders from biggest to smallest. Give the pointer time to stop moving. Adjust the smallest (1g) rider with a pencil tip or pen cap. Add up your mass

Recap What is mass? The measurement of how much matter an object consists of. What is our basic unit for measuring mass? We measure mass in grams. (g) Mass is NOT the same thing as weight!!! We measure mass on a Triple Beam Balance. First we zero the balance, then we use the riders to find the mass of the object, working from the 100 g rider to the 1 g rider.
