Mini Lesson # Falling in Love At the Party Scene Do Now: Read Act I, Scene V (Page 51) Capulet Romeo Juliet Tybalt Nurse Capulet’s Cousin Serving Man

Romeo, the Romantic Romeo quickly forgets about his love for Rosaline. He is mesmerized by Juliet’s beauty. Juliet is also taken by him. Yet, Romeo has no chance to see Juliet and say the things a lover would normally say.

What about Rosaline? Until he sees Juliet, Romeo believes he is in love with Rosaline. Yet Rosaline never appears in the play.

Romeo and Juliet’s Shared Sonnet Romeo’s mood changes to joyful anticipation when he first catches sight of Juliet at Capulet’s party. Determined to speak to her, he begins a dialogue which becomes a shared sonnet. Juliet responds to Romeo’s first words to her with four lines, making the second stanza of a sonnet.

Homework # 5 Marriage Age In your Literary Notebook, Earlier, Lady Capulet had urged 13-year-old Juliet to marry. Very shortly, in the “Balcony scene” that takes place in the same evening, Juliet agrees to marry Romeo the following day. In many countries today that would be inappropriate behavior. What do you think of the idea of getting married at 13? Suggest reasons why such an early marriage will seem acceptable.
