Ancient Views and the Modern Paradox The UK is a historically Christian country but a modern and democratic one that places importance on individual liberty. 1) Is there a problem of conflicting morality here? 2)What specific conflicts do you think may arise (think about some of the categories discussed? 3) What do you think the result is for modern British society?

Ancient views of Sex: Pythagoreans Pythagoras believed that human beings should abstain from the physical and live the contemplative life. He believed that the soul of a human being was imprisoned in the body. He thought that the physical inhibited the soul’s progress. This division of the world into the physical and the spiritual is known philosophically as dualism.

Ancient views of Sex: Stoics The Stoics took a similar line and regarded with disapproval the loss of control and animal instinct involved in sexual excitement and orgasm.

Ancient views of Sex: Cyrenaics On the other hand Aristippus of Cyrene (fifth century BCE) founded a school of philosophy called the Cyrenaics whose chief aim was to celebrate physical pleasure. He and his followers led a life of sensual enjoyment. He saw immediate physical pleasures as the supreme good and pursued them.

Views are not clear on sex education in schools (what are the advantages and disadvantages?) There is also concern about the easy availability of pornography etc…

Reflective Questions Is the central importance of individual liberty in modern sexual ethics paradoxically negatively impacting individual liberty? Reference examples in your response. Is there a better approach/central focal point to sexual ethics if not individual pleasure and liberty?
