Alconbury C of E Primary School Welcome to the Year 6 SATs information evening!

Inside your packs, you will find: A ‘Grammar Glossary’, containing the different SPAG terms we use in Year 6 A ‘Multiplication Square’, which has all multiplication facts up to 12x table ‘100 Square’ to practise number bond facts List of the Year 5/6 National Curriculum Key Words List of the ‘250 commonly misspelt words in English’ A list of questions to ask your children after you have read with them

Some of the things I’ve heard pupils say . . . “I won’t get a good job if my SATs aren’t very good.” “I won’t do very well at secondary school if my SATs are rubbish.” “Aren’t the tests like 3 hours long?” “We have tests all day, everyday.” “In Year 6, all we do is SATs!!!!”

Content of tests covers work across the whole of KS2 (in last year’s Maths papers, 70% of the questions were from the Y3, 4 or 5 curriculum!).

Attainment In all tests the children will receive a RAW SCORE (the total marks they achieve). These RAW SCORES are transferred to SCALED SCORES. If the SCALED SCORE equals 100 or above the child is deemed to be working at AGE RELATED EXPECTATIONS (ARE). Children who score scale scores of 110 and above are considered to be working ABOVE AGE RELATED EXPECTATIONS (GD).

Attainment

On the day/during the week Children will come in to school like normal. Some will naturally be a bit nervous, so we will try and help them relax. We will sort out some breakfast (toast and juice) – in the past, this has really calmed the pupils down and has given them something else to think about. In the other lessons that week, we won’t do hours and hours of revision – we will do lots of sport/art etc. If a child doesn’t know something in their learning by then, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to apply it in a test.

How can you help? First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage! Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school. Support your child with any homework tasks. Practise tables and number bonds regularly to ensure speed and accuracy. Read regularly with your child, discussing texts read. ‘A celebration of learning!’

Feedback If you could fill out one of the questionnaires on your tables before you go, that would be much appreciated! Thank you again for coming!
