Co-requisite Collaboration: English and Math at Kent State University Presented by: Steven Antalvari Director – Academic Engagement and Degree Completion
The KSU Team:
Why Quantitative Reasoning + College Writing I Both emphasize critical thinking and communication Goal Develop student’s ability to identify real life situations where mathematical approaches can be effectively communicated to a relevant audience
What the classes look like Quantitative Reasoning communicate mathematical outcomes and processes in a coherent and understandable way Rewrite ambiguous text, in a more precise/clear form Make inferences that may not be immediately obvious College Writing I Cognitive component Present reasoning spatially for the student Assess writing by checking for logical errors and unintended computational errors with data Writing also slows down the process, allowing a chance to reflect
What the classes look like Quantitative Reasoning College Writing I Work in groups on mathematical projects related to major that require sustained thinking Communicate the solution process and interpret results in a sustained piece of writing Students will: Use specific critical thinking and analytical skills developed in their writing course, to reflect and communication ways to frame and reason about situations relevant to their majors in a productive quantitative way
3 majors at the Kent Campus Non-Stem or Statistics pathway majors Who is participating 3 majors at the Kent Campus Non-Stem or Statistics pathway majors Exploratory Hospitality Management Music
