Composition and Emotive lines Egon Schiele Composition and Emotive lines

Basic info: Egon Schiele was one of the leading figures of Austrian Expressionism. He died at the age of 28 from influenza shortly after the death of his wife and daughter. Painter Gustav Klimt was the primary influence on Schiele's development, serving as Schiele's friend and mentor. Creating some three thousand drawings over the course of his brief career, Schiele was both an extraordinarily prolific and unparalleled draughtsman. He regarded drawing as his primary art form, appreciating it for its immediacy of expression, and produced some of the finest examples of drawing in the twentieth century. Even his paintings revealed a style that captured some of drawing's essential characteristics, with its emphasis on contour, graphic mark, and linearity. www.theartstory.org/artist-schiele-egon.htm

Four Trees, Egon Schiele, 1917 What composition technique is used here? Schiele uses actual drawn lines, he also uses implied lines. Where are they?

Expressionism refers to art in which the image of reality is distorted in order to make it expressive of the artist’s inner feelings or ideas. Egon Schiele uses line as his primary conduit for emotion. He emphasizes his expression with color and composition. Other expressionists are: Edvard Munch Wassily Kandinsky Paul Klee The the Brücke and Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) Group (German Expressionism) Alberto Giacometti Jean Dubuffet http://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/e/expressionism

Your Assignment: Create a landscape that uses line to express a feeling or idea about your subject matter. Use composition and viewpoint to keep your work interesting and organized. Your landscape subject matter is your choice, it may be city, country or imaginary but it deal with space and environment Your image needs to relate to the whole page when considering your composition and you need to use one of the compositional techniques provided in your packet. You use line and graphic marks to create detail, emotion and composition. Any color or value is secondary. Pencil, marker, pen and ink or ink pen, charcoal, crayon: the media choice is yours. You will be graded on the expression of emotion, linear contour mark making and composition.
