Society in Israel Report Series of reports that present social perspectives of the Israeli population Nurit Dobrin Yafit Alfandari MEDSTAT III, Barcelona 2013

S.I.R. reports have several main goals: To show all the angels and aspects of the populations welfare in one main publication To present and analyze data on poverty and hardship that cannot be resolved by financial support alone To compare the social situation in Israel to that of other countries. The comparison was made to EU countries for some of the indices and to OECD countries for other indices. To compare indicators over the years in order to examine changes over time. To highlight significant socio-economic issues by different aspects and to make this information available for helping decision makers in policy making.

The socio-economic gaps in Israel The report presents a variety of data about poverty and social hardships in Israel with a new emphasis each year Report No.1: Gender Report No.2: Population groups Report No.3: Center and Periphery Report No.4: Families and Households Report No.5: Classes in Israel: Low, Middle and High: The socio-economic gaps in Israel

The current publication, Report No. 5 has eight chapters Chapter one presents indices of population welfare, employment and standard of living: a. Part one focuses on a series of subjective indices such as satisfaction with various fields; for example: satisfaction with life, with the economic situation, with one's residence and more, relative to the socio-economic status of the locality of residence

Chapter One: population welfare, employment and standard of living, cont. b. Part two focuses on employment and unemployment indices and the relationship between employment and education. This part also includes a comparison of indices of employment in Israel and that of OECD countries. c. Part three focuses on the standard of living of households by data on income and expenditure, the composition of consumption expenditures and standard of living indices.

Chapter Two: Poverty indices in comparison to EU countries The risk of poverty The relationship between employment and poverty. Income inequality in Israel compared to Ireland.

Chapter Three deals with welfare services by the types of referrals to social services departments available to the public Main reasons for referrals to social services departments, by the socio-economic status of the locality of residence.

Chapter Four: Education Educational services Relationship between academic achievement and the socio-economic cluster using such measures as the GEMS exams, matriculation exams and meeting university entrance requirements. Dropouts from schools (under the supervision of the Ministry of Education). Higher education, a comparison between degree recipients in Israel and in OECD countries. The national expenditure on education.

Chapter Five: Health Focuses on: Life expectancy Infant mortality Births and applications to abortion committees Morbidity Persons with disabilities Self-evaluation of health Use of health services and health behaviors such as smoking, exercise and obesity, compared with OECD countries. Data on health insurance and on the national expenditure on health.

Chapter Six: Transportation, Traffic and Road Accidents Traffic in Israel: Licensed drivers and vehicles Road accidents, focus on road accidents with casualties, by the severity of accident Casualties of road accidents Casualties of road accidents while at work Transportation: trains, planes Household expenditure on transportation.

Chapter Seven: Crime Crime among youth and adults Files opened by the Israel Police Convictions in criminal cases Victims of crime.
