Carter – The Fight – Round Two Vocabulary ironic – (adj.) using words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning saddled – (verb) to give a burden or responsibility Nobody was trying to be ironic when they saddled him with the nickname “Scary Terry.” aspiring – (verb) to yearn (for) or have a powerful or ambitious plan, desire, or hope You might also think he’s one of those annoying aspiring rapper dudes. coincidence – (noun) a chance occurrence of events remarkable either for being simultaneous or for being connected If it happens to rhyme, it’s just a coincidence. stoked – (adj.) very pleased; excited Nick is probably just earning points with his girlfriend here, but I’m stoked that he’s involved. taunted - (verb) to provoke or make fun of in a sarcastic, insulting manner. And the bigger one, like, taunted him with a kissing noise and got punched. gawk – (verb) to stare stupidly I gawk out of my polyurethane prison to watch her struggling to stand and untwist her panties. clarify – (verb) to make an idea or statement clearer or easier to understand I clarify.

Carter - Cast of Characters Carter – sophomore narrator – talks inside his head a lot. Lynn – older sister. She is currently dating Nick. Nick – Carter’s sister’s boyfriend Terry – Scary student that Carter hit with a book the year before and has been away in juvenile detention since. EJ – Carter’s best friend. The “boys” – Carter’s group of friends Bag – friend whose older sister, Kammie, is having the party. Nutt Doc J-Low Levi Abby – Carter’s on again – off again girlfriend Amber –Carter’s long time crush who is pregnant. Cheryl – drunk girl in the bathroom

Carter – The Fight – Round 2 Questions Visualization: My favorite visualization in the story is when Carter and his friends are all trying to hid behind one skinny tree. What is your’s? Talk to your partner and describe your favorite visual from the story. Each of you have to have a different picture to describe. Inference: Cheryl’s version of the fight is different from Carter’s and he is starting to question his role. Do you think Carter and EJ were picking on Terry and that Carter needs to apologize? Why or why not? Prediction: What do you think is going to happen next? Describe in detail
