Is there a better way? IR created A few very wealthy business owners Some in the middle class: Most ppl were incredibly poor Is there a better way?

England passes laws: Factory Act of 1833 9 & under = illegal to work Ages 9-12 work 8 hours a day Women & kids could not work in mines (1842), max hours = 10 (1847) Good enough? Problems solved?

Unions: groups of workers who work together for better working conditions Workers’ Advantage: Hard to fire everyone! Strike: stop working Company does NOT produce anything Owner does NOT make $$$ Problems: ppl may work during strike, owners may just wait out workers, violence, can be fired So, unions were NOT always successful either….what else can be done?

Socialism The people / gov’t own some of the businesses BUT allows for some private ownership as well Can own your own business BUT gov’t provides a lot of help

Socialism EX: Socialized health care – govt provides health insurance for ALL Would you be willing to pay high taxes if it meant that everyone received health care? College paid for by the gov?

Define socialism in your own words. Who might have been attracted to socialism?

IR #6: Reforming capitalism: Utilitarianism: Do what is useful or best Reduce income gap (divide between rich & poor) Women vote, increase education, fix prisons Is this a good concept?

Out of these ideas: capitalism, utopian society, utilitarianism, or socialism, which one do you think is the best for us today? Give one reason for your answer.

It would be better if society did not have extremely wealthy or extremely poor people. Everyone should be somewhere in the middle economically. 1. Do you agree or disagree? 2. List 2 reasons for your answer.

Partner Up! Do you agree? If NOT, discuss your opinions and see if you can agree. If you do agree, discuss your reasons and come up with some fantastic arguments!

Next, 2. On your scratch paper, write down your answer to this topic with your reasons. If you disagree, you can write down both opinions. 3. Share out answers – using the cards!

Summarize the arguments you heard both for and against this idea of making everyone somewhat economically equal.

How did the Agricultural Revolution help lead the way to the Industrial Revolution? Which country industrializes first? Why? (HINT: P.A.I.N.T.) Name 2 inventions from this time period & what do they do. What is urbanization? Describe its effects. What is capitalism?
