Recognize Those Who Rule Over You Christians are to “recognize” (NKJV), “appreciate” (NASB), “honor” (NLT), or “acknowledge” (NIV) our elders. 1 Thess. 5:12 They are not to serve for these reasons, but this is how we show respect to them for the work they do. Esteem very highly. 1 Thess. 5:13
Obey Those Who Rule Over You They watch out for our souls. Heb. 13:17a There are those who will try to destroy your faith (purpose of the Hebrew letter?). Mouths must be stopped. Cp. Tit. 1:10-16 Such a difficult and stressful work! Let them do so with joy… Heb. 13:17b
Honor Those Who Rule Well Their work is vitally important, compensate them. 1 Tim. 5:17 They are worthy of their wages. Those who do well: double honor. Especially, those who labor in word/doctrine. This is explicitly taught yet hardly practiced among so many churches. Cp. Dt. 25:4; 1 Cor. 9:9-11
“Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say “Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.” (Hebrews 13:17, NLT)
