Why do you need to know more about Manual Handling? LIFTING AND CARRYING TRAINING SESSION Why do you need to know more about Manual Handling?

To encourage you to develop safe lifting and carrying behaviours. You are going to learn about The anatomy of the back How and why injuries occur, How to lift and carry safely. To practice safe lifting, carrying and unloading techniques As the child's play Video showed you all knew how to lift when you were younger

Manual Handling occurs when: Lifting Lowering Pushing Pulling Carrying Moving Holding Restraining…. ….. Any person, animal or thing So when does manual handling occur

The Spine Obviously this is a holistic view of the spine or backbone and components

Main Muscle Groups This shows the main muscles around the upper body where most injuries occur with manual handling

Generally pinched nerves occur in the lower lumbar region Spinal disks are rubbery pads between the vertebrae, the specialized bones that make up the spinal column Ligaments connect bones to other bones to form a joint. They do not connect muscles to bones; that is the job of tendons. Generally pinched nerves occur in the lower lumbar region

The Anatomy of a Disc Low back pain is a very common complaint for a simple reason. Since the lumbar spine is connected to your pelvis, this is where most of your weight bearing and body movement takes place

Over time they become larger and weak spots form

A Herniated Disc
