How Do You Spend Your Time? Day in the Life of a College Student

Set Goals Long-Term Goals---1--5 Years Graduate with an engineering degree. Get a job with a reputable firm. Buy a house. Short-Term Goals---Semester/1 year Maintain a GPA of 3.8 or greater. Join a fraternity. Get an internship. Immediate Goals---Weekly/monthly Ace test on Friday. Finish psychology research paper. Save $20 a month for down payment on a house.

Get Organized Once You Set Your Goals… Use a calendar or planner. Class schedules Due dates Study time Meetings Create “to-do” lists. Use your syllabus. Take control of your time. Review when received. Add assignments to planner. Use different-colored binders/folders for each class.

Get Organized Organize Your Tasks Find the right time. Find the best space. Keep clutter to a minimum. Limit distractions. Make time to take care of yourself. Multitask by using the “twofer” method. Take a book to study while at the laundromat. Exercise while listening to prerecorded lectures. Don’t cram. Break down your assignments into manageable portions.

Prioritize What’s on your calendar or “to-do” list? Determine if the task is important or urgent. Urgent---It needs to be done now. Important---It matters because it affects your final grade, your health, your relationships, or one of your goals. Simple Desire---You want to, but do you have the time? Set deadlines for each of your tasks and complete each one based on its level of priority.

Study Tips Find the right place. Use time between classes. Study difficult subjects first. Study in shorter time blocks with short breaks between. Avoid distractions.

Avoid Procrastinating Start small. Advertise your plans. Use the 10-minute plan. Use a study group.

Motivation Tips Keep your goal in sight. Track your success. Reward your success. Breath deeply and forcefully.
