What’s the Matter? 6.P.2.2 Explain the effect of heat on the motion of atoms through a description of what happens to particles during a change in phase. The student will understand atoms move faster and spread apart when heated.

Page 7L Discuss the following with your table partner and write your thoughts down… What do you do when you are really hot….how do you cool down? Wouldn’t you want to be further away from each other? What do you do when you are real cold, how do you warm up? Wouldn’t you be willing to get closer to other people?

Page 7L Draw a diagram in your notebooks…. What do you think molecules of solid, liquid and gas look like (draw 3 diagrams)? http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/states-of-matter

Page 7R, vocabulary On your foldable, include the vocab Page 7R, vocabulary On your foldable, include the vocab. term, definition, and a picture Expand To get larger in size, volume or quantity Particles A very small piece or part, a tiny portion or speck Thermal Energy Heat energy Vibrate A rapid, back and forth motion

Page 7R, vocabulary Fluid Any substance that flows, can be a liquid or a gas. Convection The transfer of heat by the actual movement of the heated material. Example, heat up a pot of water and the warmer water moves from the bottom of the pot to the top. Conduction The transfer of heat by direct contact between particles of something. Usually occurs in solids. (Rub your hands together) Radiation The transfer of energy through air and space by light waves. (example sun heats earth)
