5.3 Linear Relationships and Bivariate Data

Finding the Equation of a Linear Relationship - Example 1 A handrail runs alongside a stairway. As the horizontal distance from the bottom of the stairway changes, the height of the handrail changes. Show that the relationship is linear, and then find the equation for the relationship. Look at page 139 Show that the relationship is linear… What is linear? Write the equation of the linear relationship. What is the slope (ordered Pairs) 0.8 How do I find a y-intercept from a graph? Choose a point and use the slope to substitute values x, y, and m. b = 3

Making Predictions – Example #2 Look at page 140 Example #2: The graph shows the cost fro taxi rides of different distances. Predict the cost of a taxi ride that covers a distance of 6.5 miles. Write an equation of the linear relationship. Y = 2x + 3 Use the equation from step 1 to predict the cost of a 6.5 mile taxi ride. Y = 2(6.5) + 3 Y = 16 Reflect Questions on Page 141 Your turn on Page 141 #6-8

Vocabulary Bivariate Data – is a set of data that is made up of two paired variables. Nonlinear Relationship – The rate of change is different between pairs of points. The slopes are different.
