Test Review/ Writing Workshop

Announcements/Reminders Test Late Work Due Date

Last Minute Review Manifest Destiny- the belief that America was destined to stretch across the entire North American Continent Boycott- refusal to purchase a product, usually in protest

Pulling Evidence- How to Do It This is the ability to figure out which evidence supports your claim, and which evidence works against it Why would we want to identify evidence that refutes our claim? Requires an understanding of the author’s intentions, and a close reading of the source itself

Pulling Evidence- Model Claim: The labor unions were effective in securing workers’ rights because they improved safety, increased wages, and united the workforce “With all their faults, trade unions have done more for humanity than any other organization of men that ever existed. They have done more for decency, for honesty, for education, for the betterment of the race, for the developing of character in men, than any other association of men.” — Clarence Darrow, American lawyer during the Progressive Era

Pulling Evidence- Model Claim: The labor unions were effective in securing workers’ rights because they improved safety, increased wages, and united the workforce “Without unions, workers will lose many of the protections against abusive employers. Wages for all will be depressed, even as corporate profits soar. The American Dream will be destroyed for millions. And we will have a government of the corporations, by the already powerful, for the wealthy. ” —Kenneth Bernstein, teacher and blogger, in a 2011 CNN.com opinion piece on the Wisconsin measure to strip public employees of collective bargaining rights

Pulling Evidence- Practice Activity Claim: The labor unions were effective in securing workers’ rights because they improved safety, increased wages, and united the workforce You will go around the room and separate the quotes into their appropriate bins For future assessments, you will be asked to explain why you put them into that bin, so make sure that you would be able to!

Writing Claims- How to Do It I need a volunteer to come up to the board Using guidance from the class, write “The Formula” for a successful thesis Remember: Tips on your yellow Labor Reforms note sheet

Writing Claims- Practice Activity Prompt: “Support or refute the following statement: Government regulations on business had an overall positive effect on America” On your worksheet, you will write a thesis following “The Formula.” Put a box around your argument, and underline each of your supporting reasons Ex. “Mr. Bird is the greatest teacher ever, because he’s hilarious, smart, and easy to understand.” Do this individually! 1 2 3

Intro Paragraphs- How to Do It What should be in an introductory paragraph? Thesis (last sentence) Background information, setting up your argument Counterclaim (depending)

Homework! On the day of the test, you will turn in an introduction (including a thesis) for the following prompt: “Defend or support the following statement: the progressives of the early 1900s were successful in their goal of solving the problems caused by industrialization” TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!!!!!! It will go in the “Writing” category on Skyward and be the only assignment in there If you do not do it, you WILL lose 20% of your grade. The highest grade you can get is an 80%

Homework! Prompt: “Defend or support the following statement: the progressives of the early 1900s were successful in their goal of solving the problems caused by industrialization” For 10 minutes, write an intro paragraph on the prompt Make sure to include a background, thesis, and counterclaim! In 7 minutes, read your classmate’s paragraph and label the background, thesis, and counterclaim. Then come up with two positive pieces of feedback and one thing you would change. Meet up and share your feedback
