Presentation transcript:

Canada in 1945 Some key things to remember: The World has been destroyed twice within 30 years Racism and Prejudice although common has been found to one be of the terrible causes of WWII, and Canadians have felt the shame of it The USA and the USSR are now the only super powers who, although ‘allies’ deeply distrust one another

Canada 1945 We now have the ability to kill everyone on earth With the soldiers coming back, how do we make sure the same thing after WWI doesn’t happen? Women have socially progressed more than ever before…or have they? The United Nations now exists with a more specific mandate and more members

Did Canada find it own pathway by 1982? They key for many Canadians in 1945 was to prevent the poverty of 1919 and the 1930’s from ever happening again despair, intolerance and fascism Postwar Boom- infrastructure, standard of living, social programs 1945- 1982- a time of disagreement nationally- Universal Health care, Quebec Independence, Newfoundland cultural diversity, Assimilation of Indigenous Peoples, Natural Resource Development, Free trade, Repatriation of the Constitution….

Big Questions What changed and what stayed the same? What kind of global citizen did Canada become during the Cold War? What kind of Canada did Canadians want in the 1960s? What internal strife existed in Canada and how did Canada address it? Did Canada plot its own course by 1982?

Themes The Post War Era combined three different and often opposing themes: Security (international and domestic) Unity (Canadian and International) Prosperity (Canadians’ lives unmistakably got better…but it was not even)

Activity Timeline of Key Events 1945- 1982 *yes this timeline is very debatable You will need to work with someone who has a phone or a laptop Choose 10 events- search, summarize (identify the source of your information if not from the textbook), and indicate which theme Overall statement regarding the time period
