Parent’s of Highly High School Presentation By: Jessica Boyce

Overview The purpose of this presentation is to acquire about adolescent development. Physical, language, cognitive, and social-emotional development are components that develop during the adolescent period. The Mesosystem from Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological System for parents to understand how families, schools, and the community are connected Taking a look at Epstein's types of development parenting, communication, volunteering, learning at home, decision making, and collaborating with the community.

Mission for Parent Involvement Parent’s play an important role in a child’s education. It is important to let you know as a parent how you play a role in your child’s life. As parent’s and a part of the community we have very busy life styles. But it is crucial that, as parents we are involved with our children. Parent’s are a big role during the adolescent period of a child. Physical, language, cognitive, and social development are developing at school and at home. I am here to show you how you play that role in your child’s life, and how it is affected. During the adolescent period, as parents we think that they do not need much attention, because they are already able to take care of themselves. This is not true. During this period of development the child is going through several changes, the child is going to need guidance, advice, and someone to talk to. “The attachments children form with their parents and siblings usually last a lifetime and serve as models for relationships in the wider world of neighborhood and school (Berk, p. 567, 2013).” Berk, L. E. (2013).Child development. (9th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson.

What do you know about adolescence development? Physical Development: During adolescence, puberty is set in and the brain development is 95% of its adult volume (Zirpoli, 2010). Language Development: During adolescence they are able to comprehend over 40,000 words, and the ability to communicate clearly and be able to apply to social situations (Berk, 2011). Cognitive Development: During adolescence, they improve on their decision making strategies and grasp propositional thought, and be able to tell the difference form a dream to a reality (Berk, 2011). Social Development- During this time period of development the children will be going through peer pressure, drama with friends or in relationships, and getting ready to make decisions about their future. Berk, L. E. (2013).Child development. (9th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson. Zirpoli, T.J. (2010). Adolescence: Physical changes. Pearson Allyn Bacon Prentice Hall. Recommendations from a Professional Nothing could be more important than being involved with your child while being at home or at school. As a parent you need to know how they are doing in school, who their friends are, and what they do after school. As a parent you need to be aware of peer pressure, during this period of development, peer pressure is very common. Make sure that you have an open relationship with your child, therefore they can come up to you and talk to you about anything. Communication is such a key factor in adolescence. Questions to ask your self: How do you think this teen is feeling? Do you think she wants to talk to her parents? Are most teens afraid to talk to their parents?

The Mesosystem from Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological System It is important to understand how your child’s surroundings influence your child. We are going to focus on the mesosystem which is the immediate family, school, and community. From the immediate surroundings that your child encounters it what influences your child on a daily basis.

Epstein's six type’s of Involvement Parenting- is a type of involvement that influences child learning and development, by providing structure for the child. Parenting for child will encourage the children to be respectful, have time management, and make good choices in life. By doing so their will be a positive effect at school and towards the community.

Communication- "Communications about school programs and student progress" to mean two-way, three-way, and many-way channels of communication that connect schools, families, students, and the community (Epstein, p.2)” Some parents do not know how to communicate with their children. The school and the community offer resources that can help parents, to better understand their children. Communication is a key factor in life therefore, it is important to know how to communicate with your child. http://www.unicef.org/lac/Joyce_L._Epstein_s_Framework_of_Six_Types_of_Involvement(2).pdfhttp://www.unicef.org/lac/Joyce_L._Epstein_s_Framework_of_Six_Types_of_Involvement(2).pdf

Volunteering- It is important for parents to volunteer to help the school and the community. Parents can share their talents or career with the children, to help students to set goals. Students can see how hard parents work to get to their goals. This gives students motivation to complete their own goals.

Learning at home- This is a great opportunity for parents to get involved with their children. Making sure that students set time aside to work on homework, or other school related work. The parents can help their child, or get involved in what the student in learning. This a great way to communicate with your child and spend time with them. Encouraging your child or giving them help is great motivation for the child. By helping the child at home will show in school.

Decision Making- The important factor about decision making is having help and support from parents and the community. To help support students they can view different scenarios for their family and other students. Each child is different and will be making their own decisions. Giving the students to see different views will give them guidance, on their decision making skills. Parents play a huge role in helping their child to make the right decision.

Collaborating with the community- Being involved in the community is important for the parents and the child. Activities could include picking up trash, help plant trees, or having a bake sale to raise money for an event. Helping the community shows the students responsibility and how to help others.
