SWBAT Identify and define slanted language techniques DO NOW: Read the article entitled “Abolish High School Football!” on page 136 in your Springboard book HOMEWORK: 1) Read your assigned article (“Facing Consequences” or “New Michigan Graduation Requirements”) 2) Highlight/underline and LABEL at least 5 examples of slanted language.

Slanted Language With the partners you worked with last week, read through the definitions on pages 134-135 in Springboard. Work together to come up with a paraphrased definition for each term. Make sure it is: 1) Succinct 2) Correct 3) Easy for you to remember

Example... 1964 Presidential Election: Lyndon B. Johnson v. Barry Goldwater Peace Little Girl “These are the stakes – to make a world in which all of God's children can live, or to go into the dark. We must either love each other, or we must die.”

Example... Boy on Bicycle “Somebody has his hand in your pocket... Taking the 'security' out of your grandmother's Social Security.” “I ask you to join me in helping restore the individual freedoms and initiatives this nation once knew – to make government more the servant, and not the master of us all. In this free nation, we do not choose to be ruled; we elect to be governed.”

Videos What examples of slanted language/bias did we see in these videos? Do you feel these ads are effective? Why or why not? Who would you vote for, based on these commercials?

Application Go back through “Abolish High School Football!” with your partner Highlight/underline and label as many examples of slanted language as you can. Complete the SMELL chart on page 138 Choose ONE paragraph to rewrite, altering any slanted language so the passage is more objective.
