Test Friday Figurative Language Bildungsroman Identify examples, write examples Bildungsroman identify definition in your own words Theme concepts/Theme statements Identify examples Write statements based on well-known stories Explain the quote significance

Bildungsroman A literary genre that focuses on the psychological/moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. AKA: a “coming of age” story Often a novel, but could be other texts (film, poem, song…) Lit Term / Lit Concept Not really a ‘Lit device’ because it’s a type of text, not an element within a text or a technique used in a text.

Figurative Language Gr.Org Simile Metaphor Personification Euphemism

Euphemism Mild or indirect word or expression that is figuratively used to replace something that is embarrassing or rude to talk about. Euphemisms often are used to replace topics like: Death Your grandma’s in a better place now. Sex Ew! My dad wanted to have the birds and bees talk. Other uncomfortable subjects

What a “text” is really about is called its theme Theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.' In other words, what critical belief about life is the author trying to convey in the writing of a novel, play, short story or poem? This belief, or idea, transcends cultural barriers. It is usually universal in nature. When a theme is universal, it touches on the human experience, regardless of race or language. It is what the story means. Often, a piece of writing will have more than one theme.

What a “text” is really about is called it’s theme We talk about theme in two ways: Theme Concept: the topic the text is really about– sometimes this is hidden through figurative language Theme Statement: the author’s specific message about that topic, this is created by how the author writes about the subject

What a “text” is really about is called it’s theme Theme Concept Theme Statement love Love is blind. revenge Revenge is a dish best served cold. good vs. evil Good always conquers evil. beauty Beauty is only skin deep.
