Icebreaker: Floating Arms Students take turns standing directly in the middle of the floor between the sides of a doorway and push against the doorframe with the outside of the hands as hard as possible. After they have done so for 45 seconds, have them step forward and relax their arms. Both arms will float up on their own! Discuss: Did you feel like you were in control of your arms? Why do you think this happened?

Learning Target and Agenda LT: I can define and explain self-regulation. Agenda: Review emotional intelligence. Define “self-regulation” and discuss why it is important to your emotional intelligence. Short Video (link in PowerPoint) Activity Exit Slip

Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage our emotions.

Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence consists of four basic capabilities. These are: Self-Awareness Social Awareness Self-Regulation Relationship Management

the ability to focus attention, control emotions and manage behavior. Self-Regulation Self-Regulation- the ability to focus attention, control emotions and manage behavior.

Turn and Talk Have you ever felt the inclination to do something you know you shouldn’t do? What happened? Why did it happen?

Self-Regulation Skills: Why They Are Fundamental Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4UGDaCgo_s Discuss: The video says it’s hard to listen, focus, and remember rules when emotions take over. Do you think this is true? Why or why not?

Spectrum of Emotional Intensity Self-regulation involves having balanced emotions. Being shut down or revved up can have negative consequences.

Activity: Self-Regulation Comic Strip Directions: Read the table below titled “Spectrum of Emotional Intensity.” Choose ONE of the emotions from the table—anxiety, anger, sadness, or happiness. Create a comic strip that shows the entire spectrum of that emotion. The character should face a problem and deal with it in three different ways to show the three ways he/she could react– shut down, revved up, or balanced.

What is self-regulation? Do you think you have good self- regulation? Exit Ticket What is self-regulation? Do you think you have good self- regulation? Why or why not?
