The Civil War 1861-1865

Choosing Sides At the beginning of the War Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina had joined the Confederacy Not long after Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas joined and brought needed supplies and man power to the confederacy. What was the capital of the confederacy? Richmond, Virginia

Choosing Sides Four states that allowed slavery—Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware—remained in the Union- were known as???? Boarder States- these states were very important to the Union because of their strategic locations near major transportation routes. Lincoln needed to be careful not to upset ether side. He went after the people who wanted secession. In the end Lincoln's approach worked. The boarder states stayed in the Union, but many of their citizens joined armies of the South.

Choosing Sides While most southern states supported the Confederacy and most Northern stayed loyal to the Union there was some side swapping. In Western Virginia a movement to secede from the state and rejoin the Union grew. In 1861, 48 Virginia counties organized themselves as a separate state called West Virginia. Congress admitted this state to the Union in 1863.

Advantages in the North Larger population More industry More abundant resources Better banking system The North also possessed more ships, and almost all the members of the regular navy remained loyal to the Union. Larger and more efficient railway network. Abraham Lincoln

Advantages in the South More crops to feed soldiers during war Southerners also had the advantage of fighting in familiar territory—defending their land, their homes, and their way of life. The military leadership of the South, at least at first, was superior to the North's. Southern families had a strong tradition of military training and service, and military college graduates provided the South with a large pool of officers.

Strategy of the War For the North? Destroy the south's economy with a naval blockade of the southern ports Gain control of the Mississippi River to divide the south.

Strategy for the South Wear down the North and capture Washington D.C. Gain support from foreign allies such as Great Britain.

Civilans During War Raised Money Provided aid for soldiers and their families Ran emergency hospitals

Women during the War Over 3000 women served as nurses during the War. Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell – formed the U.S Sanitary Commission to send bandages , medicine, and food to Union Army camps and Hospitals.
