The Mayas, Incas & Aztecs

The Maya: (250-900 CE) Geography: rainforests of Mexico, Guatemala and the Yucatan Peninsula Represented by ruins of Chichen Itza Religion: polytheistic; they built temples to honor their gods Political: divided their civilization into city-states ruled by a king Economy: based on agriculture and trade Achievements: Only American civilization with a written language called glyphs Highly precise calendar and astronomical knowledge

The Aztec: (1300-1521 CE) Geography: Located in the hot and dry plains of central Mexico Represented by capital city of Tenochtitlan Religion: polytheistic; based on warfare, human sacrifice They built pyramids to honor their gods Political: Ruled by an emperor Economy: based on agriculture Achievements: invented Tlachtli; ballgame that uses a rubber ball or heads of sacrificed victims

Inca: Geography: Located in the Andes Mountains of South America Represented by ruins of Machu Picchu Religion: polytheistic; worshipped the sun god Inti Achievements: Built an intricate road system throughout their empire recordkeeping system: quipu Political: Ruled by an emperor Economy: based on high altitude agriculture or terrace farming Inca: (1200-1572 CE)
