Writing & supporting Claims in Informational Text 8th Grade Language Arts

What is a STRONG claim? Takes a stand on an issue Often introduces the reader to your topic Offers a perspective on that issue which can be backed up with reasons, evidence, and your analysis. Statement CONTROLS the remainder of your writing: Think of it like a contract with your reader Identifies the… - title of the article AND newspaper and/or magazine - publication date - author

Each Reason aims to… FOCUS the reader’s attention Tell WHY you think what you think

Evidence can be… Explicit / “Textual” inferred QUOTES Drawn from text Summarized statement paraphrased Drawn from text Likely to be true

Evidence must … strongly support the reason you chose. How do you do find evidence that supports your reason best? Is it repeated? is it stated by an authority? Is located in a central location of the text? Does it make sense to you?

analysis Connects the evidence to your reason Uses a transition to guide the reader Why the evidence is important ..illustrates.. …demonstrates… …Reveals… …indicates… …portrays… …Argues… ….Suggests… ….Makes it clear… This quote… This evidence… YOUR INTERPRETATION It is NOT a restatement of your evidence
