Presentation transcript:

4.1 “I can find a rule for a pattern or a function with a variable by using physical materials, visual representations, words, tables or graphs.”

4.3 “I can use variables as unknown quantities in general rules when describing patterns and other relationships.”

4.5 “I can model problems with physical materials and visual representations, and use models, graphs and tables to draw conclusions and make predictions.”

Why is this important? Anytime we put something in or do something to something we need to know the result. When ever you do something in life you need to know the result or what will happen for what you did.

Vocabulary Function - A consistent _______________ between two sets of numbers. Each number in one of the sets is ________ with exactly one number on the other set. Example: Input - Output Table

Function Tables We put dirty clothes in the washing machine. Clothes come out. The machine washes the clothes. That is the washing machines function.

Input /Out put Table Input Output 5 10 7 14 8 16

More Vocabulary Pattern - A ________ of objects, events, or ideas, that _________. Growing Pattern - A _______ that continues to go up. Sequence - A set of numbers arranged in a special order or pattern. Prediction - a forecast. Making a decision after reviewing patterns.

More Vocabulary Symbol - a material ________ used to represent something. $ # < > Unknown Quantities - a _______ whose values are solutions of an equation. Ex. 6 + g = 10

Question? Joe made a thank you note in the shape of an octagon. The length of one side of the octagon is represented by s. Joe wants to glue a piece of ribbon around the border of the note. Which expression represents the amount of ribbon needed? A. S - 4 B. s + 8 C. 8 x s D. s x m

Tiffany created a function machine with two rules Tiffany created a function machine with two rules. Whatever the input is, the function machine will multiply by 4 and then subtract 1. For example, when Tiffany put the number 10 in the function machine, the output was 39.

Question? What will the output number be when the number 5 is put into the function machine? A. 19 B. 16 C. 15 D. 47 Input Output 2 7 6 23 3 11 8 31 10 39 5

Based on the pattern, what is a logical prediction for the average daily attendance in year 5 and year 6?

How many copies can we make in 6 minutes? Input Output 1 40 2 80 3 120

How many minutes will it take to make 200 copies? Input Output 1 40 2 80 3 120 4 160

Q stands for the number of quarters Summer had in a bag Q stands for the number of quarters Summer had in a bag. She gave 6 quarters to her friend. Which expression tells how many quarters Summer now has ? A. 6 + Q B. Q x 6 C. Q - 6 D. 6 / Q
