Learning Targets I can use sensory language and transition words to describe a primary source artifact from Ancient Egypt. I can summarize information from a secondary source related to an artifact from Ancient Egypt.

Assignment Overview Write an essay about your Egyptian artifact that includes two paragraphs: Paragraph 1: a description of the artifact based on your own observations. Paragraph 2: a summary of the secondary source information about the artifact.

Include a Topic Sentence State the name of the artifact you are going to describe. Give general, introductory information. Try to avoid: “My artifact is the Great Pyramid…” “I’m going to tell you all about the Great Pryamid”. Example: “The Great Pyramid in Giza is the largest pyramid from Ancient Egypt.”

Use Descriptive Language Use adjectives and sensory language to describe the artifact. Focus on: The 5 senses: see, hear, feel, smell, and taste. Adjectives that describe: Size Shape Color Materials Texture Recognizable features

Practice: brainstorm adjectives that describe this artifact. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anubis#/media/File:Tutankhamun_jackal.jpg

Use Descriptive Language Use transition words to guide the reader through a “tour” of the artifact: Organization Top to bottom/bottom to top From the outside in Clockwise Left to right Most obvious to less obvious Transitions: Above, below, nearby, moving up… Near the edge, at the center To the right… The first thing the viewer would notice is…

Example Artifact – Obelisk at Luxor Temple Complex https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxor_Temple#/media/File:Pylons_and_obelisk_Luxor_temple.JPG

Example Descriptive Paragraph Look for: A topic sentence. Adjectives and sensory details. Transitions and organizational phrases.

Example Descriptive Paragraph The obelisk is a tall pillar that stands in front of the Luxor Temple Complex in Egypt. The pillar is made from stone that is light brown and appears to have a rough texture. It has four tapered sides that come to a point, like a tall pyramid. At the bottom of the pillar, there is a row of four baboon-shaped statues. The middle of the obelisk is carved with hieroglyphs, including several recognizable cartouches, which look like a loop of rope with symbols inside. Several of the symbols are worn out and faded. The top of the pillar is pointed, but it appears that the tip is damaged.
