The Islands of Cyclades Interconnected or to be interconnected to the main grid islands
Current situation - Power generation using fossil fuels Non-interconnected Cycladic islands (NII) have to deal with power/electricity issues. Local plants run on oil, resulting in contamination, high occurring costs and the environmental depletion of surrounding environment. This out-of-date energy model creates further trouble, such as frequent power cuts resulting in economic losses and degradation of the living standards for the inhabitants.
The huge cost per MWh and subsidies for NII, are recompensed nationwide through electricity bills.
Top priorities are the absolute respect of nature and protection of the dreamlike landscape of our islands
Project Vision & Targets The vision of the project is to create – initially on the island of Sifnos and later on more islands - a renewable energy supply system that decisively increases the share of renewable generation and efficiently substitutes diesel generation. The overriding target of the project is to give the opportunity to local communities and Cycladic SM Enterprises to benefit both economically and socially through their active participation.
5. Engage Local Community Targets 1. Reduce Costs Drastically reduce system wide energy generation costs 2. Eliminate fossil fuel Break the dependence on fossil fuels, the price of which is constantly increasing 3. Cut down CO2 Increase the renewable energy penetration and cut down CO2 emission drastically 4. Fortify Grid Increase the strength and resilience of the grid and improve overall electric power quality 5. Engage Local Community Involve the local community as a stakeholder and partner
1 Use of surplus energy to enhance public actions like charging electric vehicles, water desalination/purification, methane production for cooling and heating systems of public buildings etc. 2 Job creation 3 International tourist promotion of “green islands” and stimulate future growth More benefits
Suggested actions Cyclades Chamber of Commerce Has explored global market conditions and can secure a feasible proposal/plan, tailored to the specificities of NCIs. Has informed/sensitized local communities. Has compiled necessary feasibility studies and recommended to the State all necessary amendments to the legal/licensing framework.
Grid-Forming Hybrid Stations (GFHS) To materialize these benefits mentioned above, an expanded vision of Hybrid Plants should be introduced, the Grid-Forming Hybrid Stations (GFHS) and their interrelated Smart Energy Management Systems (SEMS) Grid-Forming Hybrid Stations (GFHS) differ from classical hybrid plants that are in place today, in terms of their ability to provide auxiliary network services. By providing these support network services, the Grid-Forming Hybrid Stations (GFHS) allow for a sharp reduction in the compulsory operation of diesel generators needed till now to provide these network services.
