The Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL) is an excellent resource to use for research. It can be accessed from any computer connected to the internet and it’s FREE to residents of Kentucky

First, log on to the computer, go to the internet, and then type this address in the address bar: www.kyvl.org The page that appears should look like this:

On the left side of the screen click on “Middle School Students”

From here you can search specific databases by clicking on each database individually, or Search them all at one time by using the “Search KYVL for:” box.

Before you look at the generated list, create an account. In the upper right hand corner click “Sign In.” Next click “Create a new Account.” (This will be the only time you click this, ever) Fill out the form using your school email address and log in credentials. Username: computer username Password: IC pw: filimmddyy Click “Continue” and you will be taken back to your list of results.

Once you have been returned to the list of results you will want to refine them. Look to the left side of the screen and: Check the box next to “Full Text” Use the slide bar to narrow the publication date Select the source types you wish to use Narrow to a specific subject Select specific publishers Specify certain publications Choose the databases you wish to use

Once the database has generated a list of results you will want to Click on “HTML Full Text” or “PDF Full Text” to view the entire article. Or click the “play” icon to watch a video.

And--narrows your search to find items that contain both keywords Don’t forget to use your Boolean operators!!! And--narrows your search to find items that contain both keywords Or--broadens your search to find items related to both keywords Not--narrows your search by excluding items containing the keyword that follows

Once you open an article you will see these tools on the right side of the screen. YOU WILL ONLY USE 2, MAYBE 3 OF THESE TOOLS. Add to folder-click this tool to add the article to a folder in your account. E-mail-click this tool to email the article to your email account. Anytime you want to access the resources in your folder, click on the folder in the upper right corner of the screen.

If you try to access KYVL at home you will see this screen and will need to enter a user ID and password. You may get these by calling the public library or asking your school librarian.
