The New deal

After world war I, most European economies were weakened After world war I, most European economies were weakened. The world depended on the us economy for stability. If anything happened to it, it would be a major disaster for the whole world. On Tuesday, October 29, 1929 the us stock market crashed.

President Hoover was one of the most hated men in America In the early 1930’s because we were going through the great depression, and he was not fixing it. People who lost their homes even called the little groups of make-shift housing “Hoovervilles.”

In 1932, a new president was elected- franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) In 1932, a new president was elected- franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). He had a plan for fixing all the problems with the us economy. He called this plan the new deal.

New deal programs were designed to put people back to work, help those who could not work, reform our government so that another great depression would never happen again.

Some programs were started just to get people working Some programs were started just to get people working. The government would hire people to build bridges, tunnels and roads. Some jobs were to Clean up parks and cities. Putting Americans back to work was the objective.

Some programs were designed to help people who were too old or disabled to work. Social security is a program from the new deal that is still around today.

Some programs were designed to reform the government to make it safer in the future. The fdic, for example, insures money kept in the bank.

FDR is one of the most beloved presidents in us history FDR is one of the most beloved presidents in us history. He is the only president to be elected president more than twice (4 times total!!!). His new deal helped us get out of the great depression, but it was wwii that really brought us all of the way out of it.

Compare the U.S. with the soviet union In the Soviet Union Stalin (totalitarian leader) created a 5year plan to get his country back on track. Whereas in the U.S, democrat Franklin Roosevelt created a series of New Deal Program to get us out of the great depression and create jobs!
