Amazing Estimators

Who is better at estimating - males or females?

purpose The purpose of this project is to determine if girls or boys are better at estimating. This is important if you want a good estimate, you know who to ask a boy or a girl.

Hypothesis We hypothesize that girls are better at estimating. We think that because last summer at the Spring Fling estimating contest, two were won by girls.

Procedures

Materials One big bag of m & m’s 5 pieces of paper 2 boxes of Reeses Pieces Marbles Brads Jar Pencils

Variables Manipulated/independent: male or female Responding/ Dependent: estimate

directions 1. Count and record the number of m & m ’s. Keep count hidden from estimators. 2. Place m & m’ s in a clear jar. 3. Have estimators estimate the number of m & m’s. Record estimates. 4. Repeat steps 1-3 with marbles. 5. Repeat steps 1-3 with brads. 6. Repeat steps 1-3 with pencils. 7. Repeat steps with Reeses Pieces. 8. Calculate the average estimates. 9. Calculate the average difference between the actual and average estimates .

Conclusion Our hypothesis was incorrect. Males are better at estimating. The females average difference was 119.23. The males average was107.08. The thing we could change is using the same amount of females and males. A new idea is that we could use height and distance.
