Identifying types of sentences Fragments and Run-Ons Identifying types of sentences

Notes Ex: Students at Union like to sleep late during their vacation. Simple Sentence- A simple sentence (also called an independent clause) contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought. Ex: Students at Union like to sleep late during their vacation.

Notes Compound Sentence- A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator (BOYSFAN). Except for very short sentences, coordinators are always preceded by a comma. Ex: I tried to write a poem, and my sister tried to write a song.

Notes Complex Sentence- A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. A complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page.  The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow.

Practice Directions: Number from 1-4. Identify each sentence as simple, compound, or complex. 1. Although I am very intelligent, I have a difficult time taking tests. 2. Zack wanted to buy new speakers for his Mustang, but he found that he didn’t have enough money. 3. I realize I am truly fortunate when I look at the amenities I have in relation to the rest of the world. 4. It is very difficult to give up my addiction to Facebook.
