Grades Grades are weighted 70/20/10 70 % for classwork 20% for assessments 10% for homework

Testing Students will have County Benchmark and WriteScore tests throughout the year. Students will take the Georgia Milestones Test. This year it will be counted.

Agendas Please check your child’s agenda every night. We are asking that you sign the agenda so that we are aware that you have seen it. Please do not write absentee excuses/notes in the agenda. They need to be on a separate sheet because they are filed. If you write a note, please tell your child to show his/her teacher before the announcements.

Homework Homework is not graded for accuracy, but for completion. It is practice to reinforce the strategies/skills taught that day. Mini assessments are given over homework and are graded. Students are expected to complete all of their homework nightly. Homework is often given over the weekend. Students are expected to read every night at least 20 to 30 minutes.

Signed Papers Signed papers are sent home weekly on Wednesday, unless otherwise noted. They need to be signed and returned by Friday. Please do not remove any graded papers from the folders. Please read any handouts, fliers, or notices that are sent in the pocket of the folder and keep them unless otherwise noted.

We expect: Expectations students to follow directions the first time they are given students to be respectful and use good manners students to follow all school and classroom rules students to do their best and achieve 80% or better on all assignments

Other Students are expected to accept responsibility for their actions, choices, and behavior. Classwork will be completed in class. Students should turn in assignments on time. Written excuses should be sent within three days of any absence in order to be excused. Please do not write them in the agenda because they have to be filed in the office. When students are going home a different way than normal, a written note must be sent to the teacher.

Partial Product Partial Quotient Area Models Higher Order Thinking Skills requiring critical thinking on word problems. Writing to explain mathematical reasoning.

Partial Product

Partial Quotient

Multiplying Decimals Using Models 0.5 x 0.3 = 0.15

Multiplying Decimals Using Models Now you try it: 0.3 x .04 =

Dividing Decimals Using Models 0.12 ÷ 0.04 = 3

Dividing Decimals Using Models Now you try it: .20 ÷ .05 =

Moving the decimal point is simple! EQ: What is the effect on a product when a number is multiplied by 10, 100, 1000, 0.1, 0.01, and 0.001? Number x 10 x 100 x 1000 x 0.1 x 0.01 x 0.001 3 30 300 3000 .3 .03 .003 5.9 59 590 5900 .59 .059 .0059 9,037 90,370 903,700 9,037,000 903.7 90.37 9.037 48.65

Fractions and Decimals are Heavy in the Fifth Grade Curriculum.

Breakout Sessions Take a break and go to the classrooms for Data Time.

Reading Students need to be able to read a text and retell with accuracy. They should also be able to read two texts and compare and contrast the various aspects of the texts. Now you try it-

Writing Should be writing in their writer’s notebook each day. Students should be able to write an on demand paper, from start to finish, within a sixty minute time frame. Students are journal writing across the curriculum.

Science

Science and Social Studies We are doing more project- based, student centered learning in all areas, especially in Science and Social Studies. Students will have more projects to do. Rubrics will be given so the students will know what is expected. Students will be required to take responsibility for their learning. They will be required to do more of the reading at home. Class time will consist of more discussions and group activities
