PAPER 3: Geographical Applications SECTION A: Issue Evaluation 1

North West: Lots of rain! 1000mm and above Lots of rain due to storms from Atlantic hitting West of UK first. South East: Little rain! 750mm and below Rain shadow effect because of mountains on the west coast means less rain.

150 litres a day (real terms 3400 litres a day) Use: Home Industry Farming Small changes needed: grey water use/ water butt in garden/ water efficient appliances/ water saving kits.

Causes of South East Water Stress! Less rain (physical factor – less than 750mm) High population (human factor) Richer population (human factor) so use more in homes/ leisure etc.

Rise of 700 million litres in 25 years! Leakage (broken pipes/ leaks in homes) Non household – factories/ farming Household – showers/ baths/ food prep/ washing machines/ gardens

5 new projects Engineering (building) Water transfer Direction of water: North West transfer to South east Water surplus to water deficit

Alternatives/ small scale: grey water use/ water butt in garden/ water efficient appliances/ water saving kits/ desalination/ repair leaking pipes/ recycle water. Opposition to projects: Impact on wildlife (habitat loss) , landscape (building can make environment look ugly) and expensive.
