From Plagiarism to Academic Excellence Trusted by 15,000 Institutions and 2 Million Instructors

Plagiarism Isn’t Just a Cheating Issue Norms for Collaboration Time Management English Proficiency Nontraditional Students Vocabulary Citation Skills Plagiarism isn’t just a cheating issue. Instead it is a symptom of other challenges students have as they begin writing at the college level. Starting at the top and moving clockwise, some of the skills issues plagiarism reveals include: Time management skills: avoiding needs to rush and take shortcuts Nontraditional students (e.g. ppl returning to school; balancing a job/family with education, veterans) Understanding citation - and why we attribute Understanding how to summarize ideas in original language (paraphrasing) Knowing how to express thoughts and ideas in a convincing manner (argumentation) Having the critical thinking skills to produce original ideas Knowing how to write in one’s own voice Knowledge of grammar rules and vocabulary Comfort with the English language (English Proficiency) Understanding norms for appropriate collaboration Strong college-level writing skills impact students’ futures – and institutions’ reputations. Grammar Paraphrasing Skills Voice Critical Thinking Argumentation

Plagiarism Isn’t Just a Cheating Issue Strong college-level writing skills impact students’ futures – and institutions’ reputations. To summarize: Plagiarism isn’t just a cheating issue - it reveals a fundamental writing skills gap that has consequences for your students’ future, and therefore for your institution’s reputation. Studies support the importance of writing in being among the strongest predictors of college success-- almost on par or just as high in predictability as high school grades.

Importance of Feedback “The simplest prescription for improving education must be dollops of feedback.” ~John Hattie

BP 1: Allow Submission of any file type Because of the Allow submission of any file type option, an Instructor from any discipline can use Turnitin.

BP 2: Report Generation If originality reports are generated immediately, they will also be generated on the due date. The reports are generated twice. This ensures that student papers within a given class are compared to each other (on the due date).

BP 3: ETS eRater Enable grammar checking using ETS e-rater technology: ETS e-Rater comments are available for students immediately after the assignment is submitted. E-Rater comments may be dismissed by the instructor.

BP 4: Student Paper Repository Submit papers to: If papers are added to the standard repository, the student username associated with that paper will not be associated with the paper. For Rough Draft assignments that will have a final draft, consider not storing the Rough Draft in the Standard Repository. This prevents the final draft from being compared to the Rough draft and generating a Similarity Index of 100%. When working in a Development or Test environment, do not store papers in the repository. Do not store papers in the standard repository that may be published at a later date.

BP 5: Rubrics Instructors can attach a Turnitin rubric to an assignment so that it can be used to score every student submission for the assignment. Students can view the rubric before submitting for the assignment.

BP 6: Feedback Studio Appearance Document Viewer: The appearance of the layers depends on the size of the viewing window. The layers will either be collapsed or expanded. To expand a collapsed layer, enlarge the size of the viewing window either by dragging the edges of the window or clicking the window maximize button.

BP 7: Rubric Scoring To open the full rubric, click View Full Size Rubric The Rubric will open in a popup, Once the rubric has been graded, click Apply to Grade, then Close, to return to Feedback Studio. If the grade does not transfer to the top of Feedback Studio, refresh the browser. Rubric Modifications and Deletions: Rubrics can only be edited/deleted by the user who created the rubric. Once a rubric has been used to score a student assignment, the rubric cannot be edited or deleted.

BP 8: Rubric Library Turnitin Rubric/Grading Form Library: Turnitin maintains a Rubric/Grading Form Library. This library is located at http://turnitin.com/en_us/community/teaching-tools/rubrics.

BP 9: QuickMarks QuickMarks Creation: The easiest way to create a QuickMark is to add a comment to a paper and then click Convert to QuickMark. QuickMarks and Rubrics: QuickMarks that are added to a paper can be associated with a Rubric Criterion. The QuickMark bubble contains a rubric icon

BP 10: Download Current View Download Current View: To download a copy of the student paper with additional information and markups added in Feedback Studio, first ensure that all layers that need to appear on the download are turned on. GradeMark Reports can be downloaded for selected students and for all students in the Assignment Inbox.

Essential Question How can I use Feedback Studio to decrease the amount of time spent grading papers while at the same time increase the academic progress and achievement of my students?
