The AP Computer Science Principles course is designed to be equivalent to a first-semester introductory college computing course. Source: CED p. 4

How is APCSP different than the “other” computer science course (Computer Science A)? CSP focuses on the innovative aspects of computing as well as the computational thinking practices that help students see how computing is relevant to many areas of their everyday lives. All course components involve computational thinking within the context of one or more of the big ideas as listed below.

Materials Needed A three-ring binder dedicated ONLY to this class. 2 dividers (to separate Vocab, important exam materials, and notes) Materials Suggested If you have your own laptop, you might want to bring it during our coding units. Otherwise, we will usually use the Chromebooks EARPHONES for when we watch videos at our own pace in class or code with sound

Big Dates The AP Explore Performance Task (PT) will be in December The AP Create Performance Task (PT) will be in March/April The AP Multiple Choice Exam is May 11, 2018

Please begin work on the vocabulary and flipped programming module outlined below at home by writing your answers, notes and thoughts in your abstractionNotebook – there is value to writing things down even though we live in a wonderfully digital world.

Innovation, Impacts & Introductions What is an Innovation? https://www.ideatovalue.com/inno/nickskillicorn/2016/03/innovation-15-experts-share-innovation-definition/

What are some examples of innovations? -New sweat wicking fabric is an innovation. - Google’s smart contact lens project is a technology innovation for measuring glucose levels. To find more, make a google search, such as “top innovations of the decade” Have a class discussion; have students work in pairs; give examples of computing innovations make searches on Google. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/AheadoftheCurve/top-10-innovations-decade/story?id=9204931 https://www.insidetoronto.com/whatson-story/5783694-10-great-innovations-and-ideas-of-the-past-5-years/

Innovation, Impacts & Introductions What is a Computing Innovation? According to the College Board: “A computing Innovation is an innovation that includes a computer or program code as an integral part of its functionality” Discuss briefly what things are and are not computing innovations – differentiate machines from computing innovations One of the MAJOR things APCSP involves is thinking about and exploring Innovations.

A Computing Innovation … A new computing creation that revolutionizes or changes the way we do things Have a class discussion; have students work in pairs; give examples of computing innovations make searches on Google. The process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay. To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. Read more: http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/innovation.html#ixzz3fjg7lbFE

Tiny self-driving robots have started delivering food on-demand in Silicon Valley — take a look http://www.businessinsider.com/doordash-delivery-robots-starship-technologies-2017-3/#this-is-the-delivery-guy-or-autonomous-vehicle-of-the-future-1 http://fortune.com/2017/03/21/doordash-robots-food-delivery-california/ https://techcrunch.com/2017/01/18/postmates-and-doordash-are-testing-delivery-by-robot-with-starship-technologies/

Be Careful! An invention is not necessarily an innovation. An invention is usually a “thing”, while an innovation is usually an invention that causes change in behavior or interactions. A MACHINE IS NOT NECESSARILY AN INNOVATION A machine is “an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite function and together performing a particular task” PEOPLE OFTEN USE the words “invention” and “innovation” interchangeably. This is not only incorrect, but misses a few key subtleties in meaning that can change a conversation. https://www.wired.com/insights/2015/01/innovation-vs-invention/ Is it an innovation or is it a machine? ttps://www.facebook.com/thegrommet/posts/10154948320175589

What 3 innovations impact your life? Ask to share with their partners, then aloud My 3: the flash drive, instead of the floppy disk The iPod, instead of CDs GPS on devices, then iPhones instead of paper maps ** in the context of this course we are talking about COMPUTING innovations

Innovation, Impacts & Introductions It’s your turn….. Introduce yourself – name, grade Share what you hope to get from this course Share ONE computing innovation that impacts your life What data does it input, transform or output?

Brainstorm or identify a Computing Innovation Homework Brainstorm or identify a Computing Innovation (you may choose one you wrote down already) and respond to the prompts. You may not know the answer to all the questions, so use the internet!

Homework Include one benefit from its use & one negative aspect These answers should be written in COMPLETE SENTENCES on the handout, along with the other questions & Make a sketch of the innovation in the blank column. These will be going on the wall :]

“Computer Science has as much to do with computers as astronomy has to do with telescopes.” -- Edsger Dijkstra
