NCNMLG 2011 Taking a Block Curriculum Online: Moving Integrated Library Instruction for a Nursing Curriculum to an Online Environment Xan Goodman, University of Southern Nevada xgoodman@usn.edu February 24, 2011
Presentation Background Collaboration Technology Challenges
Background University of Southern Nevada Relatively new, private non-profit university founded in 1999 Offering only four areas of study: Pharmacy, Nursing, Business and a residency, intern program in Orthodontics Two campuses in two states Nevada and Utah Enrollment as of Fall 2009 842 ( this number does not include our new ABSN students)
Block System Each cohort of students pass through one course (block) at a time. In order to move to the next course students must pass each course with a 90% Students are given an opportunity to reassess if they do not pass Library instruction is not included on assessments in the nursing program but is included in pharmacy. So for example in our nursing program there is a didactic portion to the course and the clinical portion. In the didactic portion this is where library instruction is integrated into the classroom. And because of the block structure we normally receive more face-to-face instruction time with students because of the block system

Lessons Learned Online is not the same as face to face What’s in it for me? This is ultimately what students want to know what is in it for them when they register for a class Even though face to face
