For impartial and confidential advice or information about local health services call our Patient Advice and Liaison Service line on 01925 843 743 Sharps – Important Information for Patients This leaflet is to help guide patients in the correct way to deal with sharps bins and boxes All patients who use needles as part of their treatment, must use a sharps bin. These are available on prescription from your GP. Last update: November 2018

Please follow the advice below carefully to prevent injury Please take your sharps containers to any of the clinics below: Sharps bins must be used for the disposal of needles, sharps and syringes. No gauze, swabs or packaging.  Discard sharps immediately after use. The sharp must be disposed of by the person who used it. Keep the container in a safe place, out of reach of children. When the bin/box is not being used, the temporary lid must be closed to prevent accidental contact with the contents. Do not overload the sharps bin. When the sharps bin is 2/3rds full, or up to the line, it must be closed. This can be done by closing the lid until you here a click. Never push items into the container. When the container is sealed, it must be taken to a Community service Clinic for disposal, not a pharmacy. Do not place in an orange bag. A list of clinics is on the next page. Please sign and date the container before you pass to the staff at the clinics for correct disposal. The new purple top containers can also be taken to Community Clinics for safe disposal. If your nurse feels you need a collection for your sharps bins (as housebound only), they will arrange it with the infection Control Nurse.
