Gothic Novels Frankenstein is a great example of the gothic novel. Gothic novels are defined by a specific set of characteristics. Supernatural Dark, Gloomy Emotional Tragic Heroic

Frankenstein’s Monster The monster from Frankenstein looks nothing like the movie. He is a tragic character—and one who is intelligent.

Misconceptions about Frankenstein Igor does not exist in the book of Frankenstein. There is no spooky castle that Victor lives in—he makes the monster in his apartment. Frankenstein’s monster is not dumb. He is dangerously intelligent. Victor isn’t a mad scientist, he’s just a student. Almost every film adaptation has been incorrect.

Mary Shelley Husband to Percy Shelley Born in August 1797, Died in 1851 Wrote several novels after Frankenstein Wrote Frankenstein on a dare to see who could write the best horror story—she won. Had three children, but only one survived. Her husband died in 1822 after his sail boat sinks. She spent the last decades of her life publishing her husband’s poetry and suffering from a brain tumor.
