Adding and subtracting in Reception ELG: Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. ELG: Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. Children should be confident in the following in order to achieve these Early Learning Goals: Counting to 20 forwards and backwards in the correct order. Ordering numbers to 20. Understanding one more and one less than a given number. Understanding the quantity of each number- numicon, multi-link cubes etc. Count objects correctly- saying one number for each object they count.

Practical activities Practical resources used: Numicon Counting objects Multi-link cubes Tens Frames Counters

Doubling, halving and sharing in Reception ELG: They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. Children should be confident in the following in order to achieve this Early Learning Goal: One to one correspondence. Familiar with some number bonds. An understanding of the concept of quantity – e.g. the “fiveness” of five. Understanding that adding means more and taking away means less.
