INNOVATION lab MEP MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL/PLUMBING : Nick Dragovich, Marcel Ramirez, Julius Wichert, Michael Yang Nick Introduce team, get names right. And we worked on MEP – mechanical, electrical and plumbing

GENERAL MECHANICAL DIRECTION Multi-use Building – Labs and Classrooms Labs – VAV Classroom – Chilled Beam Existing building vs new construction Collaboration/coordination with other disciplines Typical Equipment Layout Nick MENTORS ADD FLOORPLAN OF THE BUILDING!!!!!! Multiuse space building – Labs/Classrooms/Open space Lab – VAV – high volume of air to compensate for all the fume hoods Classrooms – chilled beams – temperature control Unique challenge of connecting new construction building to existing school, requires knowledge of existing building’s systems and plant capacity. We were unable to accurately acquire this information so we designed our own cooling/heating systems. Another aspect of MEP design is close collaboration and coordination with other disciplines such as shaft location, room layout, roof space usage, plumbing chases, utility connections, building envelope information.

AIRSIDE EQUIPMENT Dedicated Outside Air System (DOAS) Ventilation air only (slightly) smaller ducts No Economizer Active Chilled beam No fan energy to heat or cool space Outside air from DOAS connected to beam Radiant Wave “Passive System” heating only At perimeter only (cooling done by Chilled Beam) Variable Air Volume Regulate outside air to beam Radiant Wave Julius Active Chilled Beam DOAS

GREEN TECHNOLOGY - MECHANICAL Condensing KN boilers High efficiency – 95% Water Temperature Out of the Boiler – 120 F Water Temperature Into the Boiler – 90 F High efficiency Smardt chiller Magnetic Bearing Chiller Low energy use High Part Load Efficiency Low flow fixtures – plumbing 16 oz per flush “The Pint” Solar powered water faucets Condensing KN Boilers Julius Low Flow Toilets Solar Faucets Magnetic Bearing Chiller

WETSIDE EQUIPMENT Pumps + one redundant pump Magnetic Bearing Chillers Primary-Secondary Pumping Strategy Michael Equipment Location Magnetic Bearing chiller on the roof, connected to the VAV and chilled beam systems to provide cooling. Pumps in the Mechanical space on the second floor. Primary-secondary pumping (optimize efficiency of chilled water loop) with a redundant pump for maintenance. Mechanical Room Layout Magnetic Bearing Chillers

PLUMBING Fixture Count Toilets : 18 Men’s and 24 Women’s Zurn EcoVantage Flush Valve toilet with antimicrobial glaze 9 Urinals Omni-Flow Top Spud Urinal, range from 0.125 gpf to 1.0 gpf Sinks : 8 Men’s and 12 Women’s Floor drains located in Janitor closets and restrooms Lab Systems Compressed air for cleanup at lab spaces Emergency eyewash stations located in labs Chemical showers located in labs Michael Fixture counts (talk about different type of fixtures and how we got to those counts – architect given restroom counts) Lab systems – compressed air is for clean up of wood chips and metal shavings Eyewash stations, chemical showers are safety features. (add CAD layout – talk about point of connection to city) Chilled Water, Hot water, and waste to restrooms Chemical Shower and Eye Wash Station

ELECTRICAL Lighting Using indirect lighting Reduces the amount of lighting required Keeps students productive and safe (because some students are afraid of the dark) Layout Coordinated with Mechanical equipment Main panel room on second floor Marcel Typical Classroom Lighting Layout Typical Classroom Power Layout

GREEN TECHNOLOGY - ELECTRICAL Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)s Vary the speed of pumps and fans to save energy Light Emitting Diode (LED)s light fixtures Occupancy Sensors Automatic Dimming light fixture PV array 27,000 Sq Ft puts whole building ‘Off Grid’ LED Lights Marcel PV Array
