PERIOPERATIVE NURSING Promote equality for all individuals Help maintain health and safety in the workplace Help control cross infection Prepare the environment Assess, plan and implement perioperative care PRPD/DN/DM/11

PERIOPERATIVE NURSING PERIODS Preoperative Phase The preoperative phase of the patient’s surgical experience begins when the decision is made to undergo surgical intervention, and it ends when the patient is transferred to the OR bed. PRPD/DN/DM/11

Cont….. Intraoperative Phase The intraoperative phase begins with placement of the patient on the OR bed and continues until the patient is admitted to a post-procedure or postoperative area.

Cont ….. Postoperative Phase The postoperative phase begins with admission of the patient to a postoperative or postanaesthesia area, which may be a postanaesthesia care unit (PACU) or an intensive care unit (ICU) or surgical unit before being discharged from the hospital. The postoperative phase ends when the surgeon discontinues follow-up care. PRPD/DN/DM/11

Dependence of the Patient on the Qualified Team The perioperative team works to promote the best interests of the patient every single minute. For the welfare and safety of the patient, the entire team must work efficiently as a functioning single unit. The members should be familiar with procedures, setups, equipment, and policies and should be able to cope with the unpredictable. PRPD/DN/DM/11

Cont …. They should have a high morale, mutual under-standing, trust, cooperation, and consideration. All OR personnel should have the proven knowledge, skill, competency, and ability to perform an optimal level at all times.
