Short Answer Questions (SAQ) 40 Minutes Three Questions with three parts each (Basically, 9 questions) Not an essay, 3-5 Sentences per sub- question. Must fit into the space provided, won’t grade anything outside of that space!

Essays: Document-Based Question (DBQ) DBQ = Scored on a 1-7 Scale An essay that formulates an argument that answers a question based on the support from the seven documents given and their own knowledge. Requires students to also analyze historical situation, point of view/issues with sources, and provide historical context for their argument.

Essays: Long Essay Question (LEQ) Students will be given choices in the same skill Three “Types” are Possible: Causation Comparative Continuity and Change Over Time Scored on a 1-6 scale Students are expected to Create a Thesis and an Argument Use evidence to back up their Thesis and Argument Analyze the Historical Context

Note-Taking in Class Handwritten Notes Organized notes = helpful! Important to take notes in class! Write down connections, thoughts, questions to ask, etc. – not just what is on the slide or in the book Important to study the notes, rather than re- reading the book or ppt.

Study Tips Do not study facts in isolation. Instead compare to other people and events, analyze change over time, etc. Do not re-read the book – use notes Create a timeline and fill it in Think of history as a movie with characters, plot lines, intrigue, antagonists, etc. Choose an actor for different historical figures – if there was a movie, who should play him/her?

Weighted Grade Your student will have an “unweighted” and a “weighted” GPA on his or her transcript. Colleges may “unweight” it, but they will also pay close attention to what types of classes your student took. How does your student get the weighted grade?
