AP World History Parent Edition

Who is Mrs. Mattia? Savannah, GA New York Panama Arizona Bachelors from Syracuse University Masters from University of Arizona May, 2019 Four kiddos + 1 hubby

What Do We Cover? Not America. Mostly. ☺Everything else! This means a LOT in a small amount of time Importance = connections and relationships

What do I expect of your student? Reading Assignments Approximately 1 chapter a week - students should read ahead whenever they can. Additional articles, resources, primary sources Participation Essential for effective discussion Socratic Seminars Bellwork and Binders Some projects and additional assignments Shower Curtain Final Autopsy of an Empire

The Multiple Choice Exam Usually every 1-3 weeks AP Exam = 55 Questions, 55 minutes (SBMC) Assessment of… Content Knowledge Reading Comprehension Application of knowledge to new situations Synthesis of multiple facts to make a conclusion Ability to respond to a stimulus-based inquiry

Multiple Choice Example

Short Answer Questions (SAQ) 40 Minutes Three Questions with three parts each (Basically, 9 questions) Not an essay, 3-5 Sentences per sub- question. Must fit into the space provided, won’t grade anything outside of that space!

Essays: Document-Based Question (DBQ) DBQ = Scored on a 1-7 Scale An essay that formulates an argument that answers a question based on the support from the seven documents given and their own knowledge. Requires students to also analyze historical situation, point of view/issues with sources, and provide historical context for their argument.

Essays: Long Essay Question (LEQ) Students will be given choices in the same skill Three “Types” are Possible: Causation Comparative Continuity and Change Over Time Scored on a 1-6 scale Students are expected to Create a Thesis and an Argument Use evidence to back up their Thesis and Argument Analyze the Historical Context

Note-Taking in Class Handwritten Notes Organized notes = helpful! Important to take notes in class! Write down connections, thoughts, questions to ask, etc. – not just what is on the slide or in the book Important to study the notes, rather than re- reading the book or ppt.

Tips for Success Keep up with the reading notes Online Resources USE THE AP EXAM TIPS AND YOUR FOLDOUTS! Online Resources Freemanpedia Textbook Quizlet CrashCourse Videos Kahoot! Get a Review Book AMSCO is the one I recommend but you can also use Princeton Review, etc.

Study Tips Do not study facts in isolation. Instead compare to other people and events, analyze change over time, etc. Do not re-read the book – use notes Create a timeline and fill it in Think of history as a movie with characters, plot lines, intrigue, antagonists, etc. Choose an actor for different historical figures – if there was a movie, who should play him/her?

The Exam Cost = $95 (Assistance is available for those who qualify for Free Lunch) Sign Up = Students will sign up in March or end of February. Price goes up from $80 each week until April. Location = CDO Thursday, May 16, 8:00 am Arrive early, I’ll provide breakfast 4+ Hours 55 Question Multiple Choice 3 Short Answer Questions 10-15 Minute Break 2 Essays (Mentioned Earlier)

Earning College Credit How is the AP Exam scored? A scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest A score of 3 is considered “passing” the exam What earns you college Credit? 3, 4, or 5 depending on the institution.

Weighted Grade Your student will have an “unweighted” and a “weighted” GPA on his or her transcript. Colleges may “unweight” it, but they will also pay close attention to what types of classes your student took. How does your student get the weighted grade? Take the AP Exam in May Score does not matter! Score will not affect your grade on your transcript.

What do we do after the AP exam? Finals in AP World Fall semester: Normal - December Spring semester: No Final - Shower Curtain project and Study Packets (heavily weighted) What do we do after the AP exam? Relax! And watch an historical movie or two
