PRESENTATION AND PUBLIC SPEAKING

CONTENTS Methods of Presentation PowerPoint Public Speaking

WHEN WILL YOU NEED TO SPEAK IN PUBLIC?

METHODS OF PRESENTATION Determine how to present based on your topic Hands on training Classroom Know your audience Understand the level of complexity to which you should train them

WHEN SHOULD ONE USE POWERPOINT?

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF POWERPOINT?

POWERPOINT KISS Put enough words and images to visually stimulate - not enough to distract! After creating the presentation, double check to make sure it flows properly Avoid using distracting backgrounds, fonts, and images

POWERPOINT Make your slides look finished, but not crowded Use bullet points. Do not write paragraphs! Use your slides as a reference – not a script Be creative, but have someone "proofread" before your class

POWERPOINT IS A TOOL – NOT A CRUTCH

PURPOSES OF PUBLIC SPEAKING? WHAT ARE THE PURPOSES OF PUBLIC SPEAKING?

PUBLIC SPEAKING Know your topic Know your audience Can be approached similar to writing an essay (brainstorming, organization, etc.) Choose delivery method based on topic and environment (lecture, activity, etc.)

PUBLIC SPEAKING Ways to deliver a speech: Manuscript Memorized Impromptu  Extemporaneous

PUBLIC SPEAKING Arrive early and ensure everything is ready (equipment, room layout, etc.) Have a contingency plan for your presentation Engage your audience (eye contact, questions, etc.) Relax and avoid distracting body language Practice, Practice, Practice

STAGE FRIGHT No one is looking for you to fail Practice with friends or family Make eye contact Don’t worry about being 100% perfect

What are your weaknesses when giving a presentation? How can you overcome these issues?
