Early Settlers Day One

In your journal… What do you think of John Smith based on things you know about him already or from movies such as Disney’s Pocahontas? What kind of a person is he? What is he best known for? http://img0.es.ndsstatic.com/disney/principe-disney-en-la-vida-real-john-smith-en-pocahontas_3904_wide.jpg

The Real John Smith http://smithtrail.net/images/content/captainjohnsmith.jpg

John smith Notes -Left England at age 16 to become a soldier for hire and occasional pirate -Returned to England in 1605 -His military experience made him a good leader in the eyes of the Virginia Company, the group of investors hoping for large profits from the New World venture -He was hired in 1607 to help run the Jamestown colony

A struggle for control: jamestown -Conflicts broke out in Jamestown almost immediately -The first president died and the next two were deposed, colonists mutinied and deserted the colony preferring to live in the nearby woods -Smith took control of the colony in 1608 where he says he focused on survival– the safety, shelter, and food– while leading forcefully - “He that shall not work, shall not eat”

Maybe he’s not who he Thinks he is… -John Smith was almost executed for the deaths of two colonists on an expedition he lead -Mention of Pocahontas might have been a way to Smith to cash in on Pocahontas’ later fame… pg. 92 of textbook

Read “The General History of Virginia” by John smith Pg. 94-99
