Service as Action in Managebac South Iredell High School Middle Years Program 2016-2017

Service as Action Reminders... Your activities should: Meet a need in your school, local, and/or global community Be something you care about Involve something where you understand the issue or problem Involve other people Have a responsible adult supervisor who understands that activity and is able to comment on your participation Enable you to meet the learning outcomes

Activities such as the following are not appropriate for Service as Action You are personally rewarded either financially or with other benefit (unless this benefit is passed on in full to a worthy cause). An activity that you would normally participate in anyway such as a choral concert, dance performance, or competition. You are doing simple tedious and repetitive work, like returning school library books to the shelves or simply attending Student Council meetings with no active role in the community. Duties within the family like washing the dishes or cleaning. Participating in a religious activity, play, or youth group with the sole purpose of promoting a given religion. However, if such an activity benefits others without proselytizing, then the activity will count. Feeding the homeless, building homes for the needy, holiday group presentations to the community, and assisting with gift giving during holidays all count toward SA hours.

Requirements Year 4 (9th Graders) Year 4 students (9th graders) are to complete at least 35 hours with no more than 18 hours from summer Service counting toward that total. These hours are to be completed through a minimum of four (4) activities and detailed through a minimum of four (4) sets of evidence and reflections. Year 5 (10th Graders) Year 5 students (10th graders) are to complete at least 40 hours with no more than 20 hours from summer Service counting toward that total. These hours are to be completed through a minimum of four (4) activities and detailed through a minimum of four (4) sets of evidence and reflections.

Logging in to Managebac Check your school email for a message from ManageBac. This was sent several weeks ago, you may need to search for it. The title of the email should read: [South Iredell High School] Welcome to ManageBac! Click the appropriate link in your email and follow the directions for setting your password. ** If you can’t find this email, try going to sihs.managebac.com and click the “forgot my password” option. If you still have an issue, let me know.

After setting your password, login. You should see this screen:

How to add a Service as Action Activity Hover over the IB Manager tab and click the “SA” option. Then click on the “Add SA Activity” button on the right side of the screen.

Complete this form. Be sure to fill in all needed information.

Your activity will now appear on your SA worksheet.

Use these guidelines as you complete reflections

“Rules of Thumb” for Writing Reflections Reflections should be AT LEAST one paragraph of 7-9 sentences in length Reflections should include SPECIFIC detail about your activity Reflections should include explanation of HOW you met the outcomes you chose for the activity (think 2-3 sentences per learning outcome identified) Students should complete a MINIMUM of four (4) different SA activities over the course of the year with four (4) different sets of evidence and reflections

Supervisor Reviews AFTER you have completed your activity and added evidences and reflections, request a “Supervisor Review.” Click on the SA tab under the IB Manager tab, which will lead you to the SA Worksheet. Select an activity from the list for your supervisor to review. You can send your supervisor an email request to complete the review -OR- simply print it out and have them complete it in hard copy. Note: If your supervisor completes a hard copy version of your review, simply take a photo of it or scan it as a PDF to include with your evidences.

How to add Evidences & Reflections Go to the SA tab under IB Manager, which will lead you to your SA Worksheet. Select the activity you want to write a reflection for from the list. Once you have selected an activity, select Reflections & Evidence from the sidebar. Click Add New Reflection in the sidebar to add a reflection. You can choose from many mediums, including YouTube videos and journal entries. You should also include evidence for each of your service activities. Evidences can be photos, video clips, copies of schedules, etc... Each reflection you complete should explain in detail how your SA goals were met through your activity. Once this is complete, click Add Reflection & Evidence.

When will a SA Activity be marked as complete? A SA activity will be marked as complete by your SA advisor or MYP coordinator after they have seen: Evidence of appropriate planning and completion of the activity Detailed reflections that explain how learning outcomes were met (for a min. of four of your activities) A completed supervisor review

Service as Action Expectations Students are expected to log their SA activities as they occur over the course of the school year. Student advisors and/or the MYP Coordinator will complete a mid-year check in January. At this time, students will be expected to have at least half of their hours completed. Progress will be marked as one of the following: Excellent (exceeds checkpoint expectations) On-track (meets checkpoint expectations) Concern (does not meet checkpoint expectations)
